Food Demonstration Journal #8 March 18 and 20
This week I was at two food demos at different depots. Our usual demonstration at St. Lawrence was very busy. There were lots of children because of March break. We made lentil soup with toasted bagels and the adults seemed to enjoy it, but the children not so much. A few of the parents encouraged the kids to try the soup, and they did, but most of them weren’t impressed with all those veggies!
The difficulties in the economy seem to have created more need in the community for food bank support. Joe and I thought there were more first-time clients this month. It seems to take a little time for new clients to feel comfortable accepting food samples from us. Joe is so good at encouraging them with his humour and kindness.
The Kinsmen demo was very different. Most of the clients came very early, and, unfortunately, the soup wasn’t ready for the majority of them. The ones who tried the soup seemed to enjoy it, though.
The volunteer staff had plates of homemade goodies and cookies, and they were a hit!! I left the rest of the soup for the arena staff who were hosting a big hockey tournament, so it wasn’t wasted.
More people are asking for recipes, so we are taking that as a very positive sign that they are at least thinking of making some of the dishes.
