In 2004, the London Community Resource Centre celebrated its 30th anniversary The LCRC has
housed more than 100 non-profit community organizations over the last 30 years Currently,
efforts are concentrated on food security issues in the London Community
The LCRC is presently the host agency of the Hunger Relief Action Coalition,which addresses the
need of relieving hunger in London
The four main food security programs are the Community Gardens Project, the Community Food
Advisors Program, the Healthy Tidbits-Food Sampling and Food Related Information and the
Collective Kitchen Network
The Community Gardens Project has been an LCRC project since 2002 and now includes more than
18 garden sites throughout London Community Gardens began during the first and second world wars
as a patriotic duty Gardening is Canada's second favourite activity after walking
Community gardens help people from different socio-economic backgrounds interact and share
experiences about the garden
Locally produced food is increasingly popular, and community gardens provide a place to grow and
harvest food for everyone in a community regardless of background while promoting a healthy
lifestyle Healthy Tidbits is LCRC's newest program. Seniors volunteer their time to teach food bank users to
prepare nutritious meals using limited resources
Collective Kitchens introduce participants to new foods and recipes and help people become more involved in
their communities
Community Food Advisors are trained on a variety of food topics including safe food handling,
preparation and healthy eating Food safety knowledge results in cleaner and healthier kitchens as
well as food thatcan be preserved longer
