What is a Collective Kitchen?
A collective kitchen consists of a group of people who meet regularly
to plan, budget, shop, and cook nutritious meals for themselves and their
families. They are great places to make new friends, learn new skills, share tips and
have fun.
Collective kitchens can take many forms: there are kitchens for single mothers, men,
seniors, students and specific groups. Some meet once a month, while others meet every
two weeks. It's up to the group to decide how large it will be (usually ranges from 3 to 8
participants) and how it will function.
Collective kitchens are popular for a variety of reasons- food costs less because it can
be bought in bulk, it takes less time to prepare because it is cooked in quantity and
perhaps frozen for later use, and the kitchen provides a chance for people to get
together. Many people have become close friends through collective kitchens. Some
have discovered common interests that have led to mutual support.
