Cook It Up! Session #6 -- Baking with Apples
The London Community Resource Centre’s Cook It Up! program held its 6th session Oct. 19 and participants were treated to a lesson in baking with apples, courtesy of Chef Stephanie Bishop of Bake Well Pastries and Preserves.
The youth utilized the apples they had picked from their previous fieldtrip to Dwarf Tree Orchards, 1697 Byron Baseline Rd., Oct. 5.

Apple pies a hit with Cook It Up! youth
Chef Stephanie demonstrated the making of the dough, filling and crumble top with everyone watching.
The youth divided in to groups of two and each participant made their own pies, adding spices and pie
filling to their individual tastes. In addition, each participant topped their pies off with the crumble
topping they were taught to make by Chef Stephanie.
“Apple Pie was defiantly the most popular topic for our cooking classes so far. The kids –for the first
time ever- were noticeably excited from the moment they arrived,” said program coordinator Andrew
Fleet.
While demonstrating the dough making, Chef Stephanie explained that this dough recipe could be used
to make quiche or meat pies or any other type of pie. The crumble topping could be used for any fruit
crumble, and she explained how to make a traditional pie with a dough top.
The next session for the Cook It Up! program runs Nov. 9 and will involve the preparation of sauces.
