Praise for the LCRC Community Gardens: a wish for continued growth
Submitted by Bill Adams , community gardener, Thames Park Gardens
After talking to (Linda Davies, LCRC Executive Director) on Sunday (July 26, 2009) I did a tour of some
of the other gardens. I have a much better sense of what is happening at the other locations. I think
there are still four that I need to visit.
My tour took in most of the almost 500 plots that make up the community garden network. Even in some
of the smaller gardens there were things of interest that made the trip worth the effort. I ran into some
plants that I was unable to identify and that speaks to the cultural diversity of the individual gardeners.
I was amazed at the variations of gardening techniques and the way that LCRC have adapted to the
sites throughout the city.
In almost all of the gardens that I visited I had a sense of being welcome and safe. A couple of the
locations are isolated and did not feel as comfortable as others. Other gardens just spoke of an open
invitation. Come in, look around, enjoy. I was always amazed at the way individuals had met the
challenges presented at different locations. There were some abandoned plots here and there and that
was probably more of a problem in sites with lower public profiles rather than a reflection on the
communities that they were in.
I think you are doing a fantastic job and it is my wish that the growth that you have experienced this
year will continue.
