Bringing together individuals, organizations and
resource to foster community action
Tell Us Your Story
I became involved with London Community Resource Centre about two years
ago when I read in the paper that they were starting a programme called
Healthy Tidbits.
Don’t delay, tell us your story today. We’d love to hear from you. Send submissions to
lcrc@lcrc.on.ca
Thank you,
LCRC staff.
Love of cooking and educating inspires senior volunteer
Submitted by Dianne Armstrong, LCRC volunteer:
Healthy Tidbits, Collective Kitchens, Cook It Up!
I have always been interested in cooking and have spent many years trying to pass my skills on to my
children and my students. I spent my working years in education, mostly 'special' education, working with
students with challenges such as learning disabilities, autism, developmental delays and behavioural
problems.
In 2005, I decided to retire, while I still loved what I was doing and the people I worked with. After
retirement, however, there was a period of adjustment, trying to figure out 'what next'? I spent some
time catching up on reading and sleeping, but after a while, felt something was missing.
So much of my identity had been wrapped up with my family and my job that it was difficult to come to
terms with the lack of challenges! Life had become a little TOO easy.
When I joined the Healthy Tidbits group, I met some wonderful, caring people, and Linda Davies offered
more opportunities to become involved in community kitchens and now the Cook it Up Program.
It has filled my need to feel that I am using both my teaching and cooking skills in a worthwhile way and
made me realize that there is much work to be done.
Whether one is interested in gardening, cooking or some other aspect of community development, LCRC
is a good resource to consider. I will always be grateful to Linda and LCRC for helping me find a
meaningful volunteer experience.
