Doug Thomas, Community Gardener, Carling Heights Community Garden

Retired farmer finds joy in 'working the soil again'

I am writing a short note let you know how much I have enjoyed the opportunity to take

part in the garden at Carling Heights. I have been taking part in this program since this

garden plot was started.

Prior to retirement I was a farmer and now live in an apartment in the area. It means a lot

to me to have this opportunity to work with the soil again.  Although it is on a smaller scale

than farming I have had much success with growing some vegetables for my self and

friends. I have learned many things from the other gardeners and enjoy the social aspects

of the garden as well. Thanks also to those who put the picnic in Gibbons Park together this

summer.  It was an enjoyable time.

I am hoping to continue taking part in the gardening program.  It is my hope that it

continues to expand so more citizens can have this same opportunity.
