'If it tastes good, I'm puttin' it in my mouth'
Submitted by Ross McDermott, LCRC Staff
"If it tastes good I'm puttin' it in my mouth."
That, my friends, was my rather liberal rule of thumb as far as dietary planning went. But that was
before I became involved with the good folks at the London Community Resource Centre.
I began working with the local non-profit, community collaborating organization in March of 2009,
performing marketing, administrative, public relations and communication duties on a contractual
basis.
Prior to my arrival at the humble offices of the LCRC, I would spend less than a second thinking about
what I was putting in my body. I would bring processed, pre-packaged food to work for lunch or I
would make a quick trip to that fast-food joint where billions have been served, much to the chagrin
of those who worked at the LCRC.
Then, as time passed, I was subtly educated on what exactly I was putting in my body and how the
need to "Eat fresh, Think local" really was a good policy.
Now, I could go on for hours and hours describing to you the sickening, stomach-flipping horrors of
processed food that was relayed to me by my colleagues, but suffice it to say the tales of food
terror were enough to send me home, throw out my frozen chicken burgers (that never quite looked
like chicken even when cooked), and to sign off on my weekly need for two all-beef patties, special
sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun – plus I purged myself of a host of
other nasty eating habits.
Though today I am not completely a reformed junk-food consumer – I do still indulge in things I know
I shouldn’t and from time to time my less-than-refined pallet gets the better of me in the ongoing
battle against less-than-healthy foods – my experience at the LCRC has raised my consciousness on
so many food-related levels that I now exercise more critical thinking when I’m selecting items for my
weekly grocery list.
I have observed that eating healthy is not always easy. It’s not only because we as individuals don’t
have the desire to do so. Society, with all its conditioning and consumer-driven advertising, is not
exactly an enabler when it comes to switching over to healthy eating habits. Oh, contraire!
But I will not surrender in this dietary battle. As a Dylan Thomas once said, and I know this quote is a
little out of context, “Do not go gentle into that goodnight. Rage, rage against the dying of the
light.”
There is still hope for me yet!
